On the afternoon of June 18, Li Zhijian, Secretary of the Leading Party Member’s Group of Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province, visited the National University of Defense Technology, the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and IntelliMicro Medical Co., Ltd. to investigate the scientific and technological innovation and industrial development of brain-computer interface, and had a site visit of the laboratories, clinical front lines and enterprise production lines to understand the R&D, application and industrial development of cutting-edge technologies. The relevant departments of the Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province and the responsible comrades of the special work group of Hunan biomedical and medical device industry participated in the investigation.
At the National University of Defense Technology, Li Zhijian learned in detail about the technical achievements made by its research team in the electrode research and development, closed-loop control algorithms and other key technical fields of brain-computer interfaces. Li asked the team about the progress and effectiveness of carrying out industry-university-research cooperation and promoting the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements. At the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and IntelliMicro, Li Zhijian inspected the assisted wheelchair for paraplegic patients, the Class Ⅲ medical devices for assisting the blind, and other products. Li also learned about the treatment methods such as consciousness disorder awakening, and had an in-depth understanding of the application of brain-computer interface technology in the field of clinical medical care.
Li Zhijian pointed out that as a cutting-edge and emerging technology with deep cross-integration of life science and information technology, brain-computer interface is currently the key direction of national scientific and technological innovation, and it is also the key track for Hunan to cultivate and develop new quality productivity in the medical field. We should adhere to the people’s life and health, focus on the needs of diagnosis and treatment of major diseases, deepen the integration of medicine and engineering, establish a full-chain innovation ecology of “basic research - technology research and development - clinical verification - industrial application”, accelerate the research and clinical transformation of core technologies in key fields, and promote a number of good technologies and products to go to the clinic so as to benefit more patients. We should seize policy opportunities, give full play to Hunan’s advantages and characteristics, focus on cultivating and developing the brain-computer interface as an emerging medical industry, and strive to form a national benchmark in the fields of medical rehabilitation and intelligent assistive devices. The Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province will vigorously support the development of cutting-edge technologies such as brain-computer interfaces, gather advantageous resources to carry out collaborative innovation, and provide strong scientific and technological support for the development of brain-computer interface industry in Hunan.
